In the beginning Deku was just a little boy who had no real idea what being hero really means and how much effort and pain, physical and mental, it would actually take to be in big leagues. It's perfectly understandable that he really just wanted to be number one. Completely normal childish dream.
But you'd expect better from him after all that happened.
