The trouble with time commitment is also the reason why people don't read actual novels anymore. Everyone is addicted to quick dopamine bursts from short form content which neatly fits into smartphone screens. Nobody got the time or patience for novels anymore, visual or otherwise. Only light novels are still scraping by due to being quick and easy reads, but it wouldn't surprise me to learn if they were in decline too.
