In every Evangelion thread I wonder about how many details like this and the meaning people have found in them was intentional, how much was a happy accident and how much has seemingly little explanation beyond some sort of divine intervention at some level. Was it a deliberate allusion? Was it just the re-use of an angle that someone liked? Was it done on a whim because the scene had to be redone for some reason? We'll never know even as we discuss it into its fourth decade and beyond - decades later, when everyone who could possibly answer these questions is dead and gone, nothing will have changed and some of us will probably still be here.
