I agree that the initial premise is incredibly flimsy, but the progression of their relationship is so natural and real that I can sort of just ignore it since it's not the biggest deal anyway. And the blonde girl is okay, I disliked her at first but I think that her awkward obliviousness works to really show Umi's weaknesses and the way she can grow from them. A necessary evil for how honest the relationships in this series are.
