Every sandbox can be fundamentally reduced to two types:
1. Imitating successful WEGs like summertime saga
2. Padding the runtime with grinding
There's no such thing as a sandbox WEG that does it out of passion, for the love of the game, because it's the best choice for their eroge. Because it never is. At it's very best you end up as you say with "click to go here then see the scene that would've just played off the rip in a normal VN"
