It’s better to be on the rolls than not for a multitude of reasons, even if the funding is in limbo. You’ll have access to private charity programs like Museums for All to save money on entertainment, be eligible if/when funding is restored, and can make use of certain temporary assistance programs through charities in the interim.
That being said, it IS a paperwork-fueled headache to apply and get accepted, and the current admin is completely retarded and stripping this country for $$$. While your state government might be more competent, federal gutting is gonna dry up their coffers.
In the meantime, lookup your food bank’s info and see if there’s a local Food Not Bombs chapter. The food bank’s can get you some non-perishables and FNB can get you a hot meal one day of the week.
