I know a lot of young people go for engineering because they heard from someone it'll make them loads of money, as you said. While I am in engineering partly for that reason, I chose this path because I'm also genuinely passionate about maths, physics and learning how machines work and how they are built. So studying and working don't feel like a chore to me.
Plus, mechanical engineers have a lower pay ceiling compared to, say, software "engineers" or CS nerds. If I was doing this purely for the money, I'd have gone for one of those majors instead, neither of which I'd particularly enjoy as I dislike coding.
