Honestly Ted is really an interesting story, but I feel like his narrative appeals to really smart loners than his actual arguments do. Namely, a lot of the stuff Ted says doesn't even make any sense, and he'd ironically be dead if it weren't for the medical technology that saved him a a baby.
Namly, Kaczynsky is a proponent of the "“noble savage” fallacy. Those people were not freer and happier than we were. They had way higher rates of infant mortality and people were dying in their 40s from tooth decay.
The main problem with Ted (and why he appeals to so many people here) is that he was an aspie, so he thought in black and whites a lot. For example, I can tell you I'm a lot more free because of technology than my parents were. I can access basically any porn I want, education / information is almost completely democratized, and my last 6 years of work (off and on) were 100% remote as an SWE.
Ted's like the kind of dude you read to be edgy in college but eventually grow up and realize having air conditioning and flush toilets aren't exactly a need but they make life better.
