The US does use the metric system for standardization though. All of the measurements in feet / inches, pounds / ounces, gallons etc. are defined and standardized by their metric equivalent with standard multipliers.
In 1959 for example one foot was defined as precisely 0.3048 meters. So... that's metric, without decimalization, using the imperial naming scheme for units.
