The internet loves loves loves to portray this guy as an extremist, but he was mostly normal for his time and kind of boring.
Howard had at least two different women pursuing him. So, he could have done okay. He probably chose not to do the nasty because of his many hang ups, and it's nasty. Then he married (to a Jewish girl BTW). Sex lives do overwhelmingly dry up slowly after marrying -- despite the claims that anons here very angrily argue when nobody asked.
