Imagine being a WW2 veteran, you were on the front line engaged in actual combat for maybe a few months if not weeks or days as a dumb young man who signed up because your family is still in deep financial shit after the Great Depression and you figured it seemed like the only career option that didn't involve being homeless plus you want to fight for your country against foreign enemies even though you barely know who the fuck they are or what the fuck they want.

And then the war ends, a mere year, maybe 2 of your life and you back to being a regular ass civilians, maybe finish your education and get a degree, get a proper job and work hard to get promotions, get a girlfriend or two, find a wife, have kids, raise them to eventually have grandchildren, go on vacation trips, explore new places, witness the arrival of fun new technologies, have decades upon decades of so many different experiences that you've lost count as you head into your senior years.

And all of this is completely irrelevant because others refuse to define you by anything other than those handful of months that you spent shooting at random German and Japanese dudes while barely having a clue what the hell you're doing and with you no longer even remembering half the shit that happened and having to desperately make up valiant stories of getting into a fistfight with Heinz Guderian on top of a burning Tiger tank while bullets are flying all around you like it's a fucking Marvel movie because you're too embarrassed to tell them youngins about the time you jacked off to a photograph of Marlene Dietrich while on guard duty 70 miles from the actual front line where the Germans are getting pounded into mincemeat by American bombers while chomping down on dead rats and loading their rifles with whatever random shit they can find that looks roughly bullet-shaped.
