There's actually a part in the movie while the main character is becoming a more and more unstable and dangerous individual where it cuts to her being hugged and shown love by her pimp, and it seems like the movie is actually saying that even a child prostitute is safer with her abuser than the violent protagonist at that point. Very crazy even for a movie of that time.
