Every leader wants to make their country great, though usually not at the expense of everyone else. Hitler used such promises to galvanize a base in times of economic hardship.
Hitler blamed the economic troubles on the "immigrants".
The book banning is probably a bit weak but some of the universities are definitely demonized for being "too liberal".
Saying there isn't a targeted demographic is obtuse though, because it's the gays, and the brown people taking your jobs and doing crimes.
It's not there yet but it does look a lot like a trajectory towards fascism. Just because "but they aren't gassing jews (yet)" is a bit of a weak argument for it not being nazi-like.
