Why do you think it's about being the strongliest? Something goes irreparably wrong in someone's life when they are socially isolated, the social tribe thinks anomolous behavior = disease, "us" becomes "them and me", and people run out of options and go for a slop shot just force any kind of change.
All people are capable of any and all things necessary for whatever a situation calls for. At no point should anyone say something retarded like "I didn't think they could ever do that" all shocked as if they were depending on the person not doing X or Y.
Don't gossip about people. Don't participate in tribal isolation. Don't be a dick to people. We create our own monsters. You don't have to babysit people, but trying to decide who's cool and who's not will create conflict 100% of the time. We have one life on this earth, but if it can't be precious for them, why should it be for you?
A lot of people and a lot of teenagers can't see past this, even if it's mostly in their head. There's a feedback loop created, but the slightest outside influence in conflict with the train of thought will break them out of it.
