Turns out it was just me being an idiot and I have managed to fix my shotgun. It's a big beastly thing and damn near 100 years old. But I got it for dirt cheap and it has all the original furniture and bluing. Plus it can load magnum rounds and has no trigger disconnect which means I can slam fire it if I want.
