Here's a small example.
IRS Direct File launched as a test program for a few states in 2024, then expanded to more in 2025.
This program allows most taxpayers to-- as the name suggests-- directly file their income taxes with the IRS. For free.
The administration killed the program this week, staying that "private industry" can do it more efficiently.
Which means that Americans will be back to paying fees to companies like Intuit. Essentially, paying one tax to the government and another to shitty online tax filing services.
Intuit and others are well known for lobbying politicians to keep taxes complicated, which ensures that these businesses can keep charging Americans for their services.
I'm plumb out of ideas as to how this decision helps American taxpayers. It certainly helps Intuit and HR Block.
