I once talked to a guy in his 90s about this. He basically said it gets worse as you get older. That at some point, it seems like you blink and a decade goes by.
He was very hale and hearty into his 90s (died just short of 100), and a world war 2 vet. Navy pilot in the pacific. Flew PBYs, and told me a story of flying pilot rescue missions off of Iwo Jima during the battle, doing circles in case attack planes had to ditch, and watching the battle unfold.
Anyways, he was incredibly sad. His old group of buddies from the post war era had all died off, he made new friends in his 60s and 70s, and then they all died off, and he just didn't want to get to know anyone new by that point. Just stuck with family.
