Back to your ice skating scenario, let's say it happens. Imagine the entire week before and after through Anna's eyes.
>Anna: OMG, anon just asked if I want to go ice skating
>Beth: Ew, isn't he kinda weird?
>A: Yeah, but he seems kinda nice. Besides, I made sure that he understands this isn't a date, we're only hanging out for a while
>B: You do you girl, tell me how it goes.
You guys go skating and you both have fun, although you could tell you were being awkward. She's talking with Beth again
B: So how'd it go?
How it really went doesn't matter. This now depends on how Beth perceives you. If Anna can tell that Beth thinks Anon is gross, she will adjust accordingly.
A: It was okay. Hella awkward though. I don't think we'll be doing that again.
Or... you guys went skating and it turns out you're tons of fun, confident, and you had her laughing the whole time.
At this point Anna thinks she found a gem and wants to convert the nay-sayers to the pro-Anon side.
A: It was a blast! He's actually a really cool guy and he had me roiling the entire time. I actually thought his car was a piece of shit but we was explaining how he's been working part time to restore it. The inside is already done and really nice. OMG, you have to meet him!
B: Ooh, how nice is it? Did you check out the back seat?
And this is the "let's go out with my friends" situation that's always super gay, but it's designed to change their minds of you so you become accepted.
Of course this is all high school bullshit. If a 26 year old girl moves to a small town by herself, there is no social circle or friends to impress yet. Now she's on her own to judge the guys who hit her up first or wait for the guys who impress her later. This is why you see a hot chick with a scumbag sometimes.
