I don't think its linguistic I think its because there's no langoustines (scampi) in America so shrimp prepaired in the same way as some popular scampi dish became known as scampi.
here chip shops used to substitute monkfish tail as scampi, maybe you could try cooking the dish with sliced monkfish tail instead of shrimp, I bet it'd be delicious.
