You mean like puritans? They were no-fun-allowed assholes, everybody knows that. On the plus side, they were generally friendly towards the natives, in an "I'm sorry you're a heathen savage" kinda way. (Killing of natives rose as the puritans faded out and fun-loving drunken yahoos became more common. I guess killing Indians was fun)
The puritans were a big thing early on, but became a minority. We've had periodic reappearances of their kinda shit, but there's a strong cultural countercurrent against it, too.
