It was the result of Jenna Ortega decidedly not return to the show to continue voicing Gabriella, so they decided to have her go goth and unnaturally make her so-called "mature" that she's no longer interested in pranks and Cricket, and with all the effort of Cricket to change in order to be with her, ended up in flames. While they did say they won't write her off the show, but have in the background with the rest like they did to CJ from RS
