The only way to save this is for Mike to have recognized that David will break James' heart because the only one he ever gives a shit about is Paulo. Therefore it makes sense to sabotage it before this goes too far and James gets hurt. But James took Mike turning him down just fine and moved on quickly so that makes no sense.
