Elves are their real name. The word fairy comes from the Fair Folk, one of the names they're called to appease them. And elves were pretty much aliens before aliens were a thing. Think about it: mysterious beings from another world who have powers beyond mortal ken and an inhuman mindset, and are prone to abducting humans for nefarious purposes. Does that describe aliens or fairies?
