>An Aztec themed fantasy show would be a pain to research
Would it? Just take some inspiration from the mayan hero twins and other similar hero myths like that. Then mix in some blood magic that enhances their weapons and martial prowess, or invokes the environment like the sun to blind the monsters. One of the most obvious spells would be shapeshifting into a proper jaguar for instance.

Aztecs also had auto-sacrificial rites. Example harvest festivities the common practice for a common family was for the man of the house to tie a bundle of corn or wheat together, sprinkle some of his blood on top, then attach the bundle on top of the house doorway. The really gnarly stuff like heart extraction, wearing people's skins, burning people alive, torturing children to death etc. was stuff reserved only for prestigious warriors and priests. But even everyday normal aztecs had some tiny bloodletting rituals of their own. At worst they would cut themselves more severely during ritual mourning of deceased family members but thats about it.

And thats precisely what would make the setting so interesting. Otherwise civilized society with rigid rules of common decency has a theme of brutality going on whenever religion is involved. But for them its just everyday normal life.
