They were pretty friendly with pretty much every president or presidential candidate, including John McCain. Before Trump, they were probably the meanest to Hillary Clinton. The problem you have is thinking that Trump isn't an exceptional case. He's not a normal person, much less a president.
If Trump were in any way normal, he wouldn't draw this much attention.
