Sonic's popularity was honestly dying but the Sonic Theatrical Movies gave him a second wind with a new generation of brats and those are the ones who bought Sonic Frontiers making it Sonic's best selling 3D game. Sonic was on his way to cult status to death but those horrible theatrical movies completely boosted the brand.
I hope Sonic Movie 4 fails because the staff said they were making Amy more Feminism like. So that's bound to be trash.
