The cute stuff too was an important part of the show's balance that was largely lost in APC. APC, though underrated somewhat, is far more off-putting. The original Ren & Stimpy was gross but charming and sometimes even wholesome and cute. It was also psychotic, which is something the new reboot doesn't seem to actually do well at all. Only in a shallow imitation sort of way. Even Billy West couldn't fully capture John K's psychotic Ren acting.
