He was hiding behind his edgy persona so he wouldn't let anyone get close to him and risk losing another friend. Pomni kept pushing him to be friends, but he kept pushing her away to the point where he tried to be as cartoonishly mean as he could be. Nobody think he's truly an evil monster or anything- he's just an asshole that doesn't want to take anything seriously. That is all there is to it.
