It's not too much of a surprise, Augustus and Lucy both hold Mike responsible for Lucy's mental health problems and the comic does little to contradict them.
I thought initially that this was a reference to Lucy being alone during lunch but Augustus' goal is actually to preserve that state of affairs so, doesn't really fit.

As you know, all bcb characters are connected to the noosphere and are aware of the finer details of Lucy's nightmare. This is how Augustus can be sure his vague prattling will strike a chord with Mike.
As a side note I think it's possible Gus showed up with this much of delay because he was doing his "research" like in the older volumes. And I'm just imagining him watching a few of these movies that he hears James likes, hitting the asylum one and thinking "jackpot"
