Even if she explains this after the fact, that's just bad storytelling. Decent storytelling does the necessary set up for stuff like this: Having Aug listen in to find out James's hobbies which she didn't show, going to movie stores and learning about the topic or searching online which she didn't show, etc. Instead he comes out of nowhere to grief Mike and the justifications will come after if Taeshi bothers to explain it at all.
The vain hope being that James catches Aug in the lie as a fake fan, but given this has to end with Mike snapping and James/David both hating him and James being flanderized into a gay bimbo, that's got no chance.
