It's pretty clear that Augustus is doing this out of frustrated cope. He can't do anything for Lucy and so once again Mike is serving as someone else's punching bag. It's so much easier to blame Mike because that makes for a simple answer. Of course it isn't because we've seen that Lucy is fundamentally nuts, and getting Mike off the field will be a band-aid solution at best.
The comic will, of course, completely ignore this perfectly obvious answer in favor of something that is both simplistic and nonsensical. Or it will lean into the idea several years too late, long after the story has invalidated any such interpretation.
