One of the more frustrating aspects of Mike's so-called development is that he's already been the sort of person you're talking about. That version of Mike is who Lucy was pining after during the second and third volumes. He got character assassinated real hard to force Lucy's girlboss era. Old Mike would still feel guilty but find this new version of Lucy too insufferable to deal with.
