It's pretty obvious many of the core concepts were carried forward or at least transformed in some manner. Yes, you are right that we can't know what proper path the story would have taken. But considering the stuff that was carried over, it's likely a hypothetical Internecion Cube that continued without the existance of MD would have had many similar story beats.
