The more I dig just a little deeper into what's going on the less crazy Sticks seems. It's not just the government, it's all the big corporations too. All of them trying to force you to use an app to be able to use the things you already bought and paid for. "There's an app for that" is just corporations mining you for your information; fractions of a cent are worth more to them than any privacy or "rights" their users have.
A company can go out of business and because they tied their product up with the cloud based app they brick all of the devices they sold on the way out, then another company can buy out their information and send out ransomware "updates" to force a subscription model onto everyone who already owned the device.
Unless the brain of your smart devices is located inside of your own home, then none of those devices are really yours. You're just paying a long term lease at best.
