NGE is teenage alienation and depression with a mix of shitty parenting played out across the spectacle campiness of the mecha genre. It is not deep, it is blunt. Spectacularly blunt. It is the story of a disaffected and lonely teenage boy surrounded by people incapable or unwilling to provide him with the psychological and emotional support he needs (with an occasional side thread of manipulation) as he struggles with metaphorical suicidal ideation. And to be frank that's a brief overview of most of the cast barring being a teenage boy.
