I think it would be nothing short of a betrayal if the show ends in a downer ending. It would mean everything the characters had gone through would have been completely pointless.

I'd settle with something more bittersweet (like the cast choosing to cast within the digital circus, they leave and go back to their mundane lives while taking what they learned with them, or Kinger sacrifices himself to save everyone from a horrible fate).
