It's called W5 because it's Werewolf's (W) fifth edition (5).
In general though, W5 is disliked because it retcons and delete a massive amount of the strange, wacky shit that made the older editions of Werewolf so wacky and weird and to a lot of people, fun.
Werewolf tribes are no longer attached to different cultures. Anyone from any culture can be any type of werewolf, which strips away a lot of flavour in the eyes of a lot of people.
Werewolf breeding shit is cut out completely. Some people (and wolves) just randomly become werewolves because... Gaia wills it. No one knows. This means that kinfolk no longer exist, except as the name for latent werewolves. The metis breed no longer exists either.
Tribes have been watered down in ways beyond just culture. Red Talons are no longer wolf only and are just a generic "nature first" tribe. Black Furies are no longer female only and are just a generic "punish the wicked" tribe.
Because the project manager hated the Get of Fenris, they got turned into the Cult of Fenris, an antagonist tribe that represent the ultimate retardation of werewolves and what happens to werewolves who go too far trying to fight for Gaia.
The Garou Nation has been shattered and Gaia is officially dying. The Apocalypse is underway and cannot be stopped and it is a slow, torturous thing.The Garou have 100% lost and there is nothing that they can do.
The general mood and theme of the game is nihilistic acceptance of the inevitable and that the Garou can do nothing to save the world and that all they can hope to do is look after their individual human communities as the world slowly crumbles around them, that it's better to accept the Apocalypse with dignity and grace, than engage in extremism and rage against it like a mindless animal.
