My favorite are the nu-age women yearning to be one with nature and claiming they're 1/60th Lakota or something. In reality women spent their time making shoes in a teepee and figuring out new dances and songs for whatever social circle they joined. They never strayed too far from the camp. Gender roles were very strict and just like a man being a shitty hunter, a woman being a shitty shoemaker was mocked by her entire tribe and was considered lousy marriage material.

In such relatively small groups in the middle of the wilderness, you had no social leeway to do what you wanted. If you deviated from your role the entire rest of the tribe down to men, women and children shamed you, even beat you or exiled you in worst cases.
