It's unknown if it's canon that Kitty and Diane have history in the final version of the movie, or if they're strangers. The movie is just ambiguous enough that you could make an argument either way, although in the final version of the film neither of them makes any mention of having been partners in the past, or knowing each other prior to when Diane confronts Kitty. At the same time there's not a conclusive piece of evidence that Kitty was not trained by Diane either, though, so a lot of fans have accepted the deleted backstory scene as their headcanon.
(In case you haven't seen the deleted scene, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pa7ymyv0Oos )
One thing that didn't work about the framing device for Kitty's backstory though was that Diane was telling it to Marmalade, which I think would have had to be changed if it was going to be in the film. Even though Marmalade already knows Diane's the Crimson Paw, the information being conveyed to the audience about Kitty felt personal and intimate, in such a way that I could easily see Diane telling Mr. Wolf in private, but definitely not someone she's enemies with.
