Why didn't Shrek just stay human again? The problem was he wanted to be gross and keep shitting his pants or whatever, but how is the resolution where Fiona compromised really any different than if Shrek had compromised? At least if they were both human they wouldn't have to put up with the harassment of the humans in the kingdom.

Tangible benefit to both being ogres was limited to the audience's aversion to change.
