To be fair it's largely because of the deleted scenes where when Kitty was a teenager Diane took her in. I'm not saying Diane and Kitty couldn't have had a close sisterly bond without it being more than that, either, it's just that there was more to work with in the deleted material than what made it into the final movie if you're a shipper.
