It was a common stereotype all throughout the 1980s and 1990s and 2000s and the first half the 2010s before civilization ended. Asians always did very well in mathematics and standardized testing and China and Japan were well-known for heavily pressuring their children with extreme levels of studying. It's not so much a joke as an understanding of reality at the time.
