it's kind of a perfect way to explore a fairly underexplored idea - the animosity some people who underwent outdated medical procedures (or simply the ones they could afford) feel towards those who got better or more modern treatments with fewer side effects.

Grace is a scientist, so she knows at an intellectual level how this works, but at an emotional level it probably hurts a lot. maybe Barbara avoids contact on purpose because she knows that it would hurt, or is at least afraid that it would. i don't think Grace would even be the cliche "i don't want your pity" type, i think she either craves it to some extent (as she craves any care at all) or is the "i don't DESERVE your pity" type (or both).

man, why haven't they done this already? it practically writes itself, and it's a story that actually makes sense for Barbara personally rather than tangentially in her Oracle role.
