Ironically that's what makes them play it as straight as possible, since the joke ends up not being about "wow we are now serious,but we know we are being serious so we are aware and meta and lighten the tension with stupid jokes, haha aren't we great?" the joke becomes "fuck you, this is a tragedy now" and it comes so out of the blue the contrast makes it funny.
