Funky is absolutely better than DoA. Is it melodramatic and given to tonal whiplash? Sure. But unlike DoA the characters aren't all hateful and the pacing isn't abysmally glacial. Also Batiuk's writing isn't colored by obvious resentment towards his parents and a lesbian fetish he tries to disguise as being progressive.
