I don't disagree, but I'd also say that was already the case before SA1.

Sonic was already a "too cool for school" character from the beginning. Outside of Japan, he was basically marketed as a fuzzy Bart Simpson. Naka mainly wanted the change because he had a very shallow understanding of "cool".
