The toys were literally "Polly Pocket, for boys", but the cartoon was something rather interesting. It managed to take several of the toys and convert them into episodes, either focusing on the unique monster each set had, or recontextualizing certain "locations" based on the set/case. It was largely episodic, but had a main goal; Max needs to stop the Skullmaster, initially spends the first half of the series trapped beneath the surface of the earth, then much of the second traveling the world in search of means to kill or distract Max.
It had a surprisingly good balance of action and horror, with a ton of implied violence while scarcely ever even showing blood, yet managed to make it clear people got fucked up sometimes because of the monster of the week.
