Gunnverse Luthor was literally what Snyder was trying to do with his Luthor only actually faithful to the character and not aggressively, hilariously awful.
Updating Lex to make him less of an old school industrialist billionaire and more of a modern tech bro billionaire makes sense, but there's a right way to do that and a wrong way to do that. Snyder made his Lex too weird, nasally, unintimidating and autistic. Gunn still made his Lex a weird autistic techbro, but he's also got some gravitas and aura to him that Snyderverse Lex just couldn't grasp.
