Not him but part of the problem is that the designs are horrible, horrible dogshit. They neither translate to toy form well nor are they inherently appealing. Finn, Steven, Mordecai, Luz etc are all just ugly. And the characters themselves don't create emotional bonds with viewers like animes do.
