That's true. But remember that Mike wasn't claiming Sandy wasn't his girlfriend because he'd decided to reject her, he was claiming he didn't know the girl sending him letters covered in glitter-hearts saw him as more than a friend. Which to me implies that he was in denial, because the alternative is that he was being implausibly dumb.

My position is NOT that Mike is acting out of deliberate malice, that's the other anon's schtick. My position is that Mike is a stupid idiot who doesn't understand romance, boundaries, or that repeatedly telling someone they're cute gives the wrong impression. The worst thing I feel able to credibly accuse Mike of is feeling entitled to being the center of attention, but that's the least charitable interpretation.
